Jean-Michel Basquiat - artist and provocateur in the art world - took New York City by storm with his powerful and complex works that ruthlessly dealt with fraught sociopolitical issues such as race, police brutality and structural inequality. The coffee table book "Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Iconic Works" is dedicated to an exhibition at the Brant Foundation at their newly opened Manhattan (NYC) outpost and showcases the artist's most important works.

Dieter Buchhart, noted Basquiat scholar and curator, brings together one hundred of the artist's most important works and focuses on the best examples of the many subjects that have shaped Basquiat's work, from jazz, anatomy, sports figures, comics, classical literature, the African diaspora and art history. The exhibition partially revisits three critical early shows by the artist, including an exhibition of paintings and drawings of the artist's heads at Robert Miller Gallery; his main canvases from the 1982 Gagosian Gallery exhibition in Los Angeles; and Basquiat's solo show at Fun Gallery in East Village. Buchhart also delves into the artist's so-called stretcher paintings, which expose the normally hidden wooden supports for stretched canvases, works that have not yet been extensively researched by scholars. In doing so, Buchhart offers a critical assessment of the enduring importance and legacy of the artist's work.
